Metaplanet Buys $12.9 Million Worth of Bitcoin, Boosting Holdings to 2,235 BTC

Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed investment firm, has continued its Bitcoin accumulation strategy by purchasing another 135 BTC worth a total of $12.9 million. The purchase brings the company’s total Bitcoin holdings to 2,235 BTC.

Metaplanet purchased the Bitcoin at an average price of 14.3 million yen ($95,951) per BTC, for a total transaction worth 1.9 billion yen ($12.9 million), according to a Tuesday announcement. This is the company’s latest BTC purchase after it announced its Bitcoin accumulation strategy in April and officially designated its Bitcoin treasury operations as a core business in December.

Metaplanet now has ambitious plans to increase its Bitcoin holdings to 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025 and further target 21,000 BTC by the end of 2026. As of the end of 2023, the company held 1,761 BTC and this number has increased to 2,235 BTC after the latest purchase, a big step up from 141 BTC in June 2024.

Despite Metaplanet’s push into Bitcoin, the company’s shares fell 1.3% by the lunch break in Japan on Tuesday. However, since the beginning of the year, Metaplanet's stock has surged 67.5% and is up an impressive 233.7% over the past year, according to data from Google Finance.
